EVERYTHING YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ELECTRIC CARS

Title: Everything you should know about electric vehicles

With increasing consumer concerns regarding climate change, electric vehicle sales have seen a massive jump with the 2019 figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders showing a 236.4% rise year-on-year. Are we entering an era where petrol and diesel vehicles are finally coming to an end, with the future of automobiles looking entirely electric?

So how does an electric vehicle work and differ to a gas-powered one?

Well, the most significant difference between the two is the electric vehicle needs to be charged by plugging it in at a charging station, rather than filling up on harmful fossil fuels to power it. Although the upfront cost of an electric vehicle is higher, it’s far cheaper to run. Recharging at home overnight will result in the greatest savings. Another obvious difference is the number of moving parts - an electric vehicle has one moving part, the motor, unlike the gasoline-powered vehicle which has hundreds of moving parts, meaning more maintenance is required. Electric cars are also unique in that they do not feature a multi-speed gearbox like you’d find in a diesel or petrol vehicle. Instead, they have just a single gear making them far less polluting than their combustion engine counterparts.

Benefits of electric vehicles

Did you know that Electric vehicle drivers are exempt from road tax and other 'hidden costs' like the London Congestion Charge? That means for a pure electric vehicle with zero tailpipe emissions, drivers will be taxed at 0%, paying no BIK tax at all. Furthermore, the 0% rate is also extended to company car drivers in pure electric vehicles registered prior to April 6, 2020. The Government has stated that “by providing clarity on future percentages, businesses will have the ability to make more informed decisions about how they make the transition to zero emission fleets”.

How do I choose between the two?

For most drivers, the deciding factor on buying and electric vehicle is how they intend to use it. If it’s mainly to be used for short commutes, with access to chargers at both ends of your journey, the low running costs of an electric vehicle can seem extremely appealing. The bottom line is however, electric vehicles could help reduce UK transport emissions by around 25% by 2050, which in a time of climate crisis, makes the necessity of them clear.
